What Will I Study?

Human Geography
-
Topics include world population and settlement growth, changing food supplies – shortages and surpluses and the reasons for and solutions to worldwide poverty and environmental destruction.
Physical Geography
-
Topics include the study of the formation and use of ice environments, earthquakes and volcanoes and a study of coastal erosion and deposition.
Geographical Skills
-
The study of maps, sketch maps, photographs and satellite data all help in our studies of the topics listed above. The field visit forms the basis of the coursework assignment and is worth 25% of the final mark.
How Will I Be Assessed?
Your knowledge and understanding will be monitored through regular tests

The main assessment is in two final examinations which count for 75% of your final mark.

The coursework counts for 25% of the final mark.

You will be entered for the examination at either Higher level (Grades A* to D) or Foundation level (Grades C to G) for the AQA. Geography Syllabus A
What Can It Lead To?
For many jobs it is a real advantage if you have studied geography. If you study geography you will develop:

a knowledge of different places and how to use maps. You can use these skills in the forces, in transport services, an airline pilot or cabin crew and in leisure and tourism.

the ability to notice and understand what happens around you. You can use these skills to help you become a town planner, a landscape architect, a civil engineer, a market researcher, a social worker, a teacher, a manager in business or a lawyer

a strong interest in the environment. You can use this interest as an environmental scientist, a weather forecaster, an estate manager, a surveyor or work in nature conservation.
