What Will I Study?

GCSE Art and Design allows you to explore in greater depth many of the activities you will have covered in years 7-8 in your Art classes. The three-year course allows you to develop your skills in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture and Graphics further. In addition to these areas there may be opportunities to develop new skills in Photography and Computer Generated Art. The course will be a broad one, allowing you to develop your own interests in as many Art activities as possible.
There are 4 main areas of study which students can work in:-

Fine Art (Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Sculpture)

Graphic Design (Illustration, computer graphics, packaging, printing etc)

Photography
-
Three Dimensional Design (Product Design, Theatre Design, other forms of 3D imagery)

The development of practical skills is essential in the course but students will also learn about great Artists and Artwork from other cultures and from different periods in History.
How Will I Be Assessed?

Assessment takes place at the end of the course and comprises two elements.

Coursework produced over 3 years -60%

A practical examination – 40%
The practical examination is 10 hours long, completed over a certain period of time. Students are given the exam titles 6 weeks in advance to prepare ideas, sketches etc. well in advance of the exam start date. Teachers may offer guidance to students during this 6 week preparatory period.
There are 4 Assessment Objectives in the Art and Design course. Students will be expected to demonstrate a response to these assessment objectives in their coursework and examination work. Over the 2 year course students will be required to produce a minimum of 3 units of coursework. At the end of the course students will mount an exhibition of their work.

What Can It Lead To?

This course is for anyone who enjoys Art and Design and who wishes to try out new ways of working as well as developing further Art skills learnt already. It is not only for those who already know they may wish to go on to study art at A level or even Art School.

There are a huge number of careers for which Art education is a valuable foundation. These include: Architecture, Graphic Design, Teaching, Jewellery design, Fashion, Television Work, Shoe design, Textile design, Film making, Printing, Pottery, Animation, Illustration, Costume Design, Theatre design, Garden Design.
