What Will I Study?
If you choose to study Media as an option, you will work towards the BTEC First Certificate which is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s Grade A* - C. This section describes the ‘BTEC First in Media’ course.
BTEC First in Media
The media plays an ever-increasing role in shaping our society: from the film and television programmes we watch, to the music we listen to; the websites we log on to and the products we buy. You will work on tasks which require you to conduct research into a variety of aspects of the media, analysing the methods and techniques used to influence our everyday lives. You will be expected to write about your own working processes, reviewing and evaluating your performance as part of a number of individual and group creative media projects. The BTEC Media course is a vocational qualification which provides opportunities for you to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attributes essential for successful performance in the media workplace.
To do well you will need:

a mature and enthusiastic approach to your work

the ability to work as part of a group and plan well with others

confidence in your use of computers for research and presentation purposes

to set yourself targets and work to strict deadlines

to commit at least 40 minutes per week out of class time to support your progress.

There are three levels within the BTEC course and you will be assigned to one which best suits you:

BTEC First Certificate - equivalent to 1 GCSE grades A*-C (undertaken by all pupils)

BTEC First Extended Certificate - equivalent to 2 GCSEs grades A*-C
-
BTEC First Diploma - equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A*-C
How Will I Be Assessed?
The qualification is gained purely through coursework units that are assessed by your teacher. Your assessment will include assignments, performance-based observation and time-constrained assessment. There is no external written or practical examination in this course.
What Can It Lead To?
Upon successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, learners may progress into employment and/or continue their study in the vocational area.
