BTEC First Information Technology
What Will I Study?
If you choose to study ICT as an option, you will work towards the BTEC First Diploma which is equivalent to 4 GCSEs Grades A* - C. Places on this course are limited and are best suited to pupils who are thinking of employment in the ICT sector. It will enable pupils to progress to a higher level qualification relevant to ICT when they move onto further education.
BTEC First in IT
This is a vocational qualification, which has been developed to provide the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare learners to be competent users of ICT in the workplace. You will work on tasks which require you to produce solutions to problems. You will be expected to write accounts of the processes you have gone through when producing your solutions. The documents you produce often carry most of the marks for each unit. The actual product (software solution) you produce in each unit is important, but not the only assessed aspect.
To do well you will need:
-
a mature approach to your work
-
confidence in your use of computers
-
to be able to plan well and work to strict deadlines.
-
to commit at least 60 minutes per week out of class time to support your progress.
Key points about this course:
-
Motivates learners via applied learning and assessment
-
BTEC qualifications are recognised by employers and education institutions
-
Provides a good progression route to more advanced qualifications e.g. BTEC Nationals
-
Offers flexible learning and assessment
There are three levels within the BTEC First course and you will be assigned to one which best suits you:

BTEC First Certificate - equivalent to 1 GCSE grades A*-C (this will be undertaken by all pupils)
-
BTEC First Extended Certificate - equivalent to 2 GCSEs grades A*-C (option pupils mainly)
-
BTEC First Diploma - equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A*-C (option pupils only).
How Will I Be Assessed?
The qualification is gained purely through coursework units that are assessed by your teacher. Your assessment will include assignments, performance-based observation and time-constrained assessment. There is no external written or practical examination in this course.
What Can It Lead To?
Upon successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, learners may progress into employment and/or continue their study in the vocational area.
