Uniform
At a meeting of the School Governors’, the following statement was agreed.
“Healing School is a well disciplined environment and we do not underestimate the role of uniform in maintaining this scenario. Pupils will be expected to wear the stipulated uniform when attending school or when on ordinary school business”.
Full details are on the Uniform List which follows.
Ordinary shoes must be worn in school. During adverse weather conditions, boots may be worn to and from school, but pupils must still wear their ordinary shoes in school. Training shoes should only be worn for sporting activities. If they are necessary for any other reason, parents must contact the school. Situations lasting longer than a week will need a letter from a doctor or consultant.
All items of clothing should be clearly marked with the owner’s name to facilitate the return of articles which are lost or misplaced.
If clothing or footwear stipulations cannot be met, will parents please discuss the issue with the school.

Parents may purchase items of uniform from the retailer of their choice, provided the items purchased conform to the School’s colours and styles. It is a deliberate policy of the school to keep the uniform requirements simple and straightforward in order to allow parents to shop around and obtain best value for their money. |

Appearance and Belongings
School uniform must be worn at all times in school, on school visits and outside activities unless other arrangements are specifically made with staff. Do not wear rings, earrings or jewellery of any kind, other than a wrist-watch. A normal hair-slide, clip or “bobble” is acceptable, but the multitude of hair ornaments favoured by some girls is not. On health and safety grounds, studs or sleepers will not be permitted, so any piercing of ears, etc., will need to be done at the start of a long holiday.
Guidelines on such things as length of skirt, hairstyles, etc., are given at times in the school publication, “Healing Hotline”, distributed via pupils. However, for your guidance now, here are some criteria by which hairstyles will be deemed inappropriate for school and the learning environment:
- hair so short that it might identify the individual with negative social groups or attitudes; for instance, a “number one” cut is not acceptable.
- extremes of style or colour,
- marked contrast in hair length or colour.
Long hair should be tied back in any practical situations, such as science or technology rooms. Facial hair should be shaved as and when appropriate. Cultivated beards or moustaches will not be accepted. Our principal criterion for the length of skirts is common decency. Our adopted standard is 4 inches above the knee.
Make-up is also considered inappropriate, so save that for socialising in the evenings or weekends.
Property
You must take responsibility for all your personal clothes and belongings; make sure that everything has an identification mark or name label on it. Do not leave valuables in cloakrooms/classrooms. The School cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to valuable items brought into school, and no insurance cover is provided. Lost property is retained by matron for one month, after which un-named items will be given to charity.
Mobile Phones
Mobile telephones must not be brought to school, unless by previous arrangement with parents. In this case, phones must be left at the school office, and collected at the end of the day. Mobile phones or other electrical items will be confiscated if these arrangements are not followed and parents will be requested to collect them. If in doubt about any aspect of uniform, appearance, or property, pupils/parents should contact the school beforehand.
