Girls into Engineering
Year 8 Girls Engineering & Enterprise Challenge November 2009
A team of eight Year 8 girls competed against the other secondary schools in North East Lincolnshire to defend the title Healing have held for the last two years, as winners of the Engineering event held at the Grimsby Institute. Molly Brumpton, Megan Hines, Grace McCann, Jessica MortimerBrown,Katie Mulligan, Chloe Staples, Amy Tully and Ariana organised themselves into pairs to complete all the tasks they had been set. Students worked together in pairs on each of the tasks but also needed to work closely together as a team to ensure that all the parts were compatible. The team was ably supported by a young engineer from Novartis, whom the girls had to interview during the course of the day, to find out more about his company and career. All teams launched their rockets out of the hall Ours was extremely successful, travelling over 52m, going further than anyone else’s! At the end of the challenge, the whole team had to present their sales pitch to the judging panel, ‘Dragons Den’ style! The day allowed students to find out about employment opportunities within the field of engineering, sales and marketing. All our students were a credit to themselves and the school – well done!
